Effects of PIP on background checks
Question to all recruiters, EMs and SDEs
Does getting into PIP affect your career?
Suppose someone is placed in PIP and they bag a new offer during that time without disclosing the PIP situation, would it be disclosed by the previous company’s HR during background check? Does it affect the new company offer?
Also, if someone has been placed in PIP during their career at any time, would it affect their career trajectory in the long run?
What do EMs, recruiters and HRs think about the candidate when they get to know that they have been placed in PIP before?

PIP will NOT affect background checks. Don't disclose PIP and layoffs to the future company.
However, PIP might affect getting rehired in the same company in the future. For eg, if you were PIPed at Amazon, you can not boomerang back to Amz unless you get VP's approval

This is helpful. Thanks!

Depends on the relationship of the future org with the prior org - unless they pick up the phone to a prior colleague for reference the PIP won't show up

Your PIP status will not be known if you play your cards well. Unless the background check is done very deeply with your last manager. But this is not usual

As far as I know, companies will not disclose internal performance data including PIP status to any third party

No.
