He’s been involved in shady shit in the past is what I read on X. Personally I don’t really trust anyone who’s got a sudden “nation first” business idea for two reasons.

They see this as a PR move to win allies in the current regime or the social media warriors who are in huge numbers now.

As a founder / business you won’t really make a move which hampers it. It doesn’t make sense economically. I maybe see how this won’t be bad atm for the company considering majority of his user base are Indians and they will boycott Maldives as per them and this won’t affect his business hence.

Contrary to what others have written here, I think as a business owner if there was racism against my country done somewhere, maybe I’d rethink business with that country too.
Whether their intentions are pure, or marketing focused, we’ll not really know

Almost everywhere in the world people are racist to non-locals. Within India itself people are discriminated against basis language you speak or how you look or what you eat.
Taking a knee jerk reaction to an incident doesn’t sit well as a SOP for businesses. Some may pan out some won’t but on an overall level, I’d think not panning out would be a majority result

The racism issue might be overblown due to Geopolitics powerplay by India. While Maldives ministers' comments were distasteful, Indians have faced similar remarks by people from Qatar, Kuwait, Turkey, etc, due to the Israel-Palestine crisis , but GoI let it slip. Because we had no leverage over gulf due to large expat population in Middle East and are dependent on oil.
Maldives, however, is a tiny country (its gdp is 1/20 of tier 1 cities in India), and they are currently leaning heavily towards China. I think India (with US / Quad backing) would instigate a coup to get rid of this government in the near future
