Domain Transition
How is everyone transitioning from one domain to another? I have 3 years of experience working in infrastructure domain, where I worked as Jira admin, Service virtualization engineer with Tosca OSV tool and a little bit in change management. I wanted to move into Data analytics field as I'm not interested in any of these, and have learned Advanced Excel, MS Power BI, MySQL and Python, where I did some projects with large data as well.
I have been applying but I'm not receiving any calls, not sure about the mistake I'm making here. I keep seeing these posts about people easily transitioning domains like this. The referrals are also not working, though there are job openings listed in the career pages, internally the job ID's are not found.
Even though I have 3 years of experience, I can't showcase that properly because of this domain difference. I'm kind of stuck now, as I'm on bench at the moment and the time given is also up. I do not want to be at the same company as I'll be stuck here for couple of years if I take up a new project now, another problem is the 90 days notice period.
I would really appreciate any suggestions from all here.
There are two ways to switch domains -
-
Have good relationship with management and switch domains within the same company. Your managers will allow you to do this if you maintain good relationship with them.
-
If you want to switch domains into a new job, you cannot openly say to a new employer that you're from a different domain and you're trying to switch. No one will take a risk on a person without relevant experience and hire them.
In that case, you have to be a little "creative" with your resume, and show that your previous work was related - i.e. in your case, you can show that in your past project, you were doing Data Analytics work related to infrastructure, e.g. modeling the behavior of infrastructure components to predict failures in advance.
That way you can "bridge" your past domain & new domain, and show experience related to the new domain, and talk about both domains in the interview to show your knowledge.
Good luck! 👍
