Domain shift to software Engineer

I'm a hardware engineer in Qualcomm doing analog electronics testing. My skillsets are Analog electronics testing, machine Learning, python, data analytics .

I've done some work in Qualcomm with machine Learning too.

Considering the work culture, openings, pay scale, benefits of hardware vs software companies....I feel software companies pay and work culture are way better.

And I have moderate skills in software development.

Would it be a right decision to shift to Data science roles from semiconductor testing jobs? Considering AI advancements and semiconductor industries changing...am I making my long term career more tough by leaving semiconductor job?

Please give your opinion.

Not an expert but may be an opinion to consider.

There are 3 sub fields. Data science, Machine learning, Deep learning + LLM.

The data science thing is now kind of rare. I mean it has no such future. LLM can fo basic data science task. But data science requires domain knowledge. So of you are doing some data science on any electonics field, then it will be useful. But historically if you see, 5/10years ago everyone was talking about it, but now almost no one. This ks basically the base of ML/DL with domain knowledge.

Machine learning algo are beaten by DL. Although these are used, but everyone says they are using DL.

DL+LLM this is the main market focus now from both technical and business aspect. Hard for you to get a job in it immediately, but with 5/3yrs of Ml+DL, you could get into it. But who knows what LLMs can do after 5yrs.

Again, as I said, just consider it, dont take decision on the basis of this comment.
