Does your college tag actually matter after 3 YOE? Let's settle this.
Let me be brutally honest. Yes, it absolutely does. Everyone on LinkedIn feeds you this BS that "skills matter more than your degree after your first job." Total crap.
I have 4 YOE, built core systems at my company from scratch, and I'm constantly cleaning up the mess made by my "Tier 1" peers. Yet, when promotions happen, the IIT/BITS guys get fast-tracked. The alumni mafia is too real. Even recruiters still secretly filter resumes based on college tags for senior roles.
It hurts my ego to admit it, but if you're from a Tier 3 college like me, you'll always have to work 3x harder just to sit at the exact same table. Stop coping.

Yes. It always matters. You wont notice it directly..but a ivy league tag can subtly get you things without struggles for which "normal college" junta struggles

Let me be as straightforward as possible. Tags are important. Now until you land a big company, you keep the college tag, once you land the big company, you use the company tag and don't require college anymore.

Country has a serious obsession with tags—tier 1, IIT, IIM, product-based, x LPA, lives in Bangalore, works at or founded a startup, crorepati, owns a house, government job, PSU job, AIIMS, NEET, drives x car, data "scientist," developer, etc. These are seen as good, while their counterparts are viewed as bad by society.
This tagging drives us to chase cars and clothes, working jobs we dislike to buy things we don't need. High dopamine, zero serotonin.

And what matters?
- To me, serotonin: I’ve mentally checked out of this 'tagging culture.' If you don't develop an IDGAF attitude toward these labels, you’ll end up burnt out or on meds, like I did.
- To most, dopamine: practically, many remain trapped in the chase. Society has conditioned us to see people as a collection of labels rather than human beings. We are a byproduct of a system that values the 'tag' over the person.

You or I'd never be able to "settle this". It's a trap not under our control.

If u want that tier 1 tag … then u can always pursue mtech or mba from tier 1 colleges… simple!!!!

Don’t go for distance learning through them, that’s the only advice I will give. I took the WILP one gave all exams in the BITs centers but still they discard it as if I never did the Mtech at all during interviews

Absolutely matters absolutely. Avg Dev's from great colleges might be posted in great companies but great Dev's from avg colleges might not have those opportunities so yea it's sad but it is what it is. That's why people need to start studying hard in 12th and 11th and jee.

Yes matters a lot, I used to think the same - reality is hitting hard, No matter how highly skilled I have become by constantly learning and experimenting max to human capacity, I still can’t beat the fact that 7 years back I graduated from a tier 3 college and my package won’t be as good as tier 1, neither the capability for securing fundings for startup is as easy as it comes with the tag.
Skills are important but having that tag puts you in another league.

Yes it matters to land in your dream company or big companies, folks argue on this but your CV gets shortlisted based on this tier-1 clg

Company Brand matters much more than college.

Yes, your tier 1 tag matters for a long tym
