If you have a job, luck has played it's part cuz we have so many people competing for the same role that there might be atleast* one applicant who is more skilled than you for the same role that you got but they got rejected during the initial HR resume screening round.

Building positive working relationships with stakeholders & leadership is as important as performance. With great relationships and above avg performance chances of promotion is more as compared to vice versa. Building relationships doesn't mean boot licking but engagement more than just when required.
