Do you directly approach hiring managers/recruiters for referrals? Also do you hate yourself?

It is absolutely impossible these days to get a call without referral. (me saying these days like I know how it was before)

Do you dm employees or look for recruiters? I have been told the latter wala is effective but what's the point?
