The honest answer is No, u don't need to work from Office until your system says wfh in days. The wfh gets automatically approved even if ur manager doesn't do it manually.

You can apply for wfh as long as your manager is approving it. Even if he's ignoring its fine as it gets auto approved after a week.

I think you need to be in office for 4:30 hrs and for remaining 4:30 hrs you need to get it approved as on duty. Now I am not sure how the approval works when on bench.
