A badly worded advice is "to gain a friend, be a friend first". In my experience if there is no reciprocation, back off fast.
Keeping a strike system, like there are only maximum of two strikes and on third they are out.

I agree. Always being the one giving can be exhausting. That being said, the fear of losing friends, especially when making new ones has been challenging, can weigh heavily on you and probably that's why it is difficult to back off.

Sadly, almost every human thinks they are the ones giving/putting alotta effort and not receiving the same or more in return.
Instead, just gain trust, you never know when you might need someone in life. It's always better to be on good terms with people.
Play it cool.
