Developers place in AI world
Hello folks, as jobs are cutting due to companies adopting AI, I want to know what exactly is needed from the developers capabilities, apart from creating AIs because creating an AI is itself a never ending road.
I have knowledge of software development, what exactly should I learn next. What are the biggest firms looking for considering they can’t just integrate third party AIs with them. They got loads of precious data.
You have to learn two kinds of things:
-
How to use AI as your assistant for existing software engineering tasks - using Copilots, prompting, spec-driven development, etc.
-
How to do AI engineering, i.e. applying software engineering to AI-based systems - fine-tuning, alignment, RAG, multi-agent systems, A2A, MCP, MLOps pipelines etc.

Biggest firms will self host open source LLMs and will use AI anyways.
For your concern, just get strong on software development. I mean the "real strong" who understands what they work on.. at an advanced level.
Architecturally sound persons will never be replaced with. If not them, then no one else will understand whether the AI builds something in a right way or not

Right now, my tech stack is Java and PL/ SQL. I did also learn a lot in React back in college. What should I focus on next to become such a person you mentioned. In my company, I haven’t learned much about software development. The tech stack and practices are way too old.
