Designation Matters: A Lesson I Learned the Hard Way

Sometimes, in the excitement of exploring new opportunities, we make decisions that seem right at the moment but teach us a valuable lesson later. I experienced this firsthand when I transitioned from an AVP Engineer role to an Engineering Manager position.

On paper, it looked like a step forward – better salary, new responsibilities, and a fresh challenge. But what I didn’t realize at the time was how much the designation itself can impact our motivation and sense of progress. Moving to a role that felt like a step down in hierarchy left me questioning my decision, despite the perks.

This experience taught me that career moves should not only be about financial growth but also about alignment with personal goals, professional satisfaction, and how we perceive our journey.

To anyone facing a similar dilemma: always think long-term. The title on your resume isn’t just a name – it’s a reflection of the path you’ve carved for yourself. Don’t let short-term excitement compromise your broader aspirations.
