Design Managers: How do you vet applications at scale?

This is for design managers at big companies who receive a lot of applications - how do you review portfolios at that scale and figure out who is worth talking to?

If your team has a dedicated recruiter taking care of this, can you rely on that person's understanding of good/bad portfolios?

If you are down to discuss this 1:1, beer/coffee's on me! Would be super helpful as someone who is in charge of recruiting good designers at my startup!

At our company, the design team handles all design hiring, applications, screening. HR will only reach out to the candidates approved by the design team for the HR opening round to discuss things about company, pay, basic info.

They do not get to decide who's portfolio is good/bad. That responsibility lies with our team.

Creative director posts opening, everyone on the team can send referrals, portfolios are then screened. Then a call is made. 95% of our hires are referral based.
