Dark secrets about premier colleges

Just got to know recently that a tier 1 mba college didn’t conduct interviews as part of their admission process during covid. Just CAT scores sufficed.

In addition to this, post admission, these batches didn’t have proctored exams, they could collaborate and solve the exams together and then submit their answers online.

Please do reply if this was very common during Covid across other colleges and any other such crazy lapses across colleges.

In another college, there is no resume vetting and people can and do add a lot of BS "achievements". This is also the college with the largest intake and almost every second person has something like a director's merit list or an honors' list or they are a 'torchbearer'.

I went to “BSB”, and can confirm that this statement is only partially true.

  1. Yes, there is no resume vetting. It’s trust based and as with any trust based system there will be bad actors who exploit the system. One could argue this is a bad system — or one could argue that all colleges should come from a place of trusting students and treating them as adults vs treating them like children. “Innocent until proven guilty” is the mantra for BSB. People are free to disagree.
  2. However, these specific “awards” mentioned in the comment ARE NOT fake. They are given out by the college close to graduation. Deans list is top 10% of class by CGPA, torchbearer is top 5% of students who contributed to extra-currics etc.

MBA interviews are totally bs though, so it may not have mattered. Though I don't have an MBA, I applied for MBA last year and interviewed at few b-schools such as ISB, NUS, NYU etc. The entire setup is tailor made for people who can tell stories (it reminded me of Amazon LP round 😂).

Tech interviews based on leetcode may not be perfect, but they are wayy more objective than these oral interview rounds ever could. In such oral interviews, where even the interviewers expect you to exaggerate your impact.

I think the interviews are important since the ability to BS about your impact is probably one of the most imp skills that can lead you to senior management.

One of the IIM ABC - my friend had an impressive CAT score, in the interview, the interviewer was an equally large cricket fan as my friend, for the entire duration of the interview, thats all that they discussed, he got in :)

Pits 🅱️ilani - students get internships and offer from FAANGMULA just on the basis of cgpa, hardly any interviews or coding tests are taken, just because students of 🅱️ilani have "builder mindset"

Really ? In my IIT we had pretty tough coding rounds but I know people who cheated and cleared big companies. Me being a dumbass didn’t 😞

CAT is the most bullshit exam, mostly a fluke. Then comes the selection criteria of top bschools another bs to be honest barring few top 3-4 bschools. Most of the students dont learn anything except for making up good stories which the world can believe. Best part is MNCs sell them a dream of luxury life and ppl are happy selling shampoos, soaps, sodas and they think they are changing the world. Bschools are all just money minting machines who just sells fake dreams. 24yr old gets 40-50L ctc and they think they will be the next CEO of FAANG but thts not how it works. Reality hits hard I know some of the ppl who are in depression or just tired of all this drama taken huge education loan and now car loan bcz hey if you are working for big 3 consulting firms you have to drive atleast 25L worth of car right. Its all just a vicious circle driven by showoff and jealousy.

Strongly disagree that CAT is a fluke exam.

CAT does assess you on aptitude and your hold on the English language. These are two really important points on which your career depends on. I have seen folks in a board room having no grip on their numbers, inability to estimate projections. Add to this, really poor emails being sent to senior folks in the company or outside. And college interviews at the very least help in weeding out folks who are poor in articulation / verbal communication. Obviously, every parameter is relative to the cohort who is writing the test or going through the interview.

Just got to know from few friends that at one of the tier-1 engineering college, companies give offers without any interviews, just based on the cgpa.

Cat score usually has ~50% weightage during admissions so nothing new here.
And exams are useless in MBA anyway. Hell 90% of the shit you learn is inconsequential so I bet even with all this fuckery those people will get good placements just based on college name.

Similar shit I read a few days back on X that someone was complaining that people are getting Faang internships by cheating on coding tests, so nothing new

CosmicQuokka

I recently graduated from a Tier 1 MBA:

  1. Interview was taken but there was no GD during the admission.
  2. Exams were completely online in the first year so students used everything possible (google, WA etc.) to write answers.
  3. CV screening was strict during placements (everyting was verified two times)
PS: Placements at MBA are totally luck based, your profile doesn't guarantee you a specific company no matter how good it is.
