Current Product Design scene in India is a joke

PS: Not working at Capgemini, just a burner account

I've been in this field for about 4-5 years now and post-covid this field has become a borderline joke and I feel embarrassed to call myself a PD now.

I hate how these dumbass influencers on Instagram and LinkedIn are glorifying UX as an easy field that involves a lot of Visual Design work, importance to "craft", motion design etc.

The kind of work I do involves a LOT of user research, planning, testing, domain knowledge, technical knowledge and actual hands on design work is like only 10% of my job on a good day. Now because of these influencers whenever I tell people I'm a PD they assume that my work is easy, doesn't take much time, I just have to design screens etc and I keep on explaining to them that you're wrong and there's more to it.

Moreover, a lot of interviews I've given were sooo focused on the UI, VD part and they totally neglected or ignored the research I did and kept on asking me about the "explorations" I did for my design, how my UI looked, inspiration for the UI etc and I'm like bruh, I work in healthcare and not at cred 🤡

Thanks to clowns like Puneet Chawla, Anudeep UX, the head of clowns at Swiggy I forgot his name, kids think if they follow these clowns they can get into FAANG or some top tier company.

I'm really scared of the direction we're headed towards because of these influencers and how they're glorifying UX as a field

It is for any role nowadays, only thing now matters is what people are getting at the end, they don’t care why you have put a corner radius of 18 or 24.

As a software engineer I also think your work is easy, in the name of research you all just see how other competitors company is solving the issue and alter it as per your taste. That you take days to craft something basic to change it later after a year in the name of “experience”. Especially When you say user research and technical knowledge,bs. I have seen it all from designers, they think they are making a dent in the universe, and should be given all the attention.

See, being coming from the same field If I am not able to understand your work, now think of people just starting their career or are from different fields.

You are an artist, you don’t have to get validation from someone who doesn’t appreciate or understand the depth of your work.
Bring the great work and see if its solving the problem as you expected. ✌️ Those who cares knows the importance of it.

Roasted the whole industry single handedly 💀 While I do agree with your points, the true skill/impact of a designer can be seen in an uncommon, unexplored domain. E-commerce, quick commerce, ride hailing, fintech, have all been solved for.

@if_else_if_else this is exactly why I made the post because people lately feel that UX is easy thanks to these influencers and graphic designers who think UX is all about changing corner radius or adding drop shadow.

The number of health compliances and regulations I have to research and learn about before designing, patient patterns, their lifestyle, anticipating the results before changing the UI, what could go wrong, setting up the product timeline and roadmap, showing metrics, uncovering what the user wants etc. This is what I do but too bad people think all we do is add gradients to boxes.

And I never said we are making a dent in the universe, neither are majority of the SWEs. Copying code from stack overflow and calling yourselves engineers and coders?

All I said was because of these influencers the industry as a whole is becoming a joke

People who say product design is not about visual design are legit dumb or are working in b2b companies where visual has no lever. (Example: Lets Transport, Delhivery)

Not to forget, how some bootcamp grads are all talk no show. On a side note, most of these gendu pseudo designers have a very punchable face lol.

Karm kiye jaa, fal ki Chinta na Kar.

I will let you on a little secret. Most of the actually good product designers are not creating any content. They are busy with their work.

I'm not a designer per se, but could tell you that in the end the final product and its metrics moving positive matters. How we crafted it nobody cares about it .

I agree on some points, ux influencers are clowns and have glorified Ux design way too much.

But it has low entry barrier compared to other design forms like motion design and 3D. People learn figma and boom here we go “I am unicornX heuristic evaluationer”.

What pisses me off is how UX design is portrayed as “classy”, “intellectual” design field while other forms are considered inferior labour work.

Its makes me sad how people get infleunced by likes Punit Chawla, UX Anudeep etc and talented artists like ranganath krishnamani (liquidink), dope motions etc don’t get the credit they deserve.

I’ve seen designers who can do basic layout but boasts about themselves as intellectual UX designers, use heavy ux jargons etc but shit in their pants when asked to do visuals.

To a point it does make sense what you are saying is indeed true, product designing is not an easy job, and yea glorifying this industry has definitely made it seem like it's an easy career.

What do they do exactly? Many of them are earning well. I'm referring to those who work in big MNCs or large startups.

I can see many companies with little to no ui changes over the years. And there are some companies which don't requi...
