Yup, completely agree. Talk and act friendly but stay cautious never give ammo to the people who can shoot in the back the moment they get a chance. (Those people are colleagues, speaking with personal experiences)
Get your work done with diplomacy and at fast pace even if it comes out as rude, your work is your.

Then you'll be having great relationship with client but not lead or manager and yes they will lay off you first.
Lol usse asli m side hat nai bolna h par there are ways to say ki you are not performing and i will not hesitate to signal team lead or manager as bottleneck.
He will be questioned why his work is not completed and if you have dependenvy on them.
Obviously u give them time to do job but also publically call out in meetings if he stops your work.

I am not a talkative person and hardly talk outside work

Learnt this the hard way and trying to improve, failing but still trying tonimprove.
My LM has this figured out - talk about movies, fitness, highway construction, tolls, sports, gadgets, netflix series, cooking, gardening, weather. Basically everything in the world except office stuff, personal stuff, monetary stuff, investments.
Many responses here are correct in saying you need to talk to people - to build rapport, to not come off as aloof/suspicious/silent types.
But need to learn to stick to topics that dont reveal anything that could be used later against you.
Colleagues are not friends - this is absolutely true. But you can always talk with such people. No need to share your everything but why get bored.
This is so true. When the time comes no one will have your back .
