company is asking me to return my retention bonus

posting on behalf of a friend - he works at samsung and recently got an offer from google.

but apparently he had received a retention bonus of 6L from samsung this year. and now, the company is asking for it back.

is this return enforceable? how often do such big companies enforce it? what happens if he defaults? can he negotiate it down?
