Choosing the Uniform Over the Keyboard? CDS ⚔️ AFCAT vs. Software Engineer
Hey everyone, I'm 24M with 1 year of full-time experience and 1 year of internship experience in the IT industry. Currently, I’m not working and have been actively looking for opportunities for the past 3 months. I’ve made it to the final rounds multiple times, but unfortunately haven’t been able to cross the line yet.
During this period, I also appeared for the SSB interview, but unfortunately got conferenced out. Coming from a defence background, this path isn’t just a career choice for me it’s an emotion, a dream I truly connect with.
With the current uncertainty in the IT job market and the rapid shift towards AI, the future seems quite unpredictable. So, I’ve been seriously considering whether I should devote the next 6–8 months completely to preparing for AFCAT and CDS.
To clarify I’m not chasing government jobs in general. It’s specifically the armed forces that I feel drawn to. However, since exams like IBPS SO IT Officer also follow a similar timeline and syllabus, I’m thinking of giving it a shot too, just as an attempt during this phase.
Realistically, I don’t have major responsibilities right now. I know I can always return to IT after a year if things don’t work out but given how volatile the market is and how layoffs are becoming more common, I feel it’s wiser to try for something meaningful now, rather than face regrets or added pressure later when family responsibilities kick in.
Would love to hear your thoughts especially from anyone who’s been in a similar situation or is preparing for defence exams while transitioning from tech.

Been in the same situation, I'm working in it from past 4 years & preparing exclusively for upsc meanwhile, not interested in any other gov job. It's because of passion I have. I connect with you. Go for the one which your heart wants!! All the best!

That truly means a lot. I really admire people like you who stay committed to their passion despite the comfort or stability that other jobs might offer it’s not easy, especially in today’s uncertain market. Nothing but respect for your clarity and dedication. I’m also in a phase where I want to follow what genuinely connects with me, not just chase trends. Thanks again for the encouragement wishing you all the success in your UPSC journey!
