Career progression in marketing

I want to know how is the career progression after doing a majors in marketing from a tier 2 b school.

Does having worked for a brand matter while making a switch.

How do I ensure a robust career growth if I dont get a good profile or good company for marketing. (I think I most probably end up at bank for a sales role or a other sales role at a well known company)
