Career Advice : Engineering to research based roles

Hey all, I currently work at a remote agri tech startup as a mid-senior engineer and looking to pursue postgrad studies (MS / PhD). I already have international exposure and familiar with the admission processes atleast at the undergrad level as I did my undergrad from abroad. I want to switch into research and was wondering if there are people with similar experiences willing to share more about there journey including all the process involved and how difficult the transition was?
