Candidates have lost the plot with their rejection excuses

Recently set out to close a senior role and had a really strange experience

Went through weeks of interviews.. The guy was technically brilliant - which is okay I understand good talent is hard to source.

But then after negotiating and rolling out the offer:

• He called me yesterday to reject the job. He did not even sound apologetic about wasting our time. Or care about the effort from me to get him maximum budget.

• His reason literally was that his tarot reader told him our workplace aura is bad. He is a senior techie, and definitely has a logical brain. But just absurd.

• This reduced my backup options to literally zero candidates. For a rejection, generally expected some logic or a counter-offer from him. Barely went into the depth of professional reasons, and would over-explain his spiritual planetary alignments, without being able to realize how unprofessional he sounded

I am genuinely shocked and taken aback. This was a highly experienced professional, and I just did not expect it to be so bad. A shock for me, and a future shock for whoever tries to hire him next!
