Pop Os. It used to be a Ubuntu Fork with driver support added, but it's much different now, especially with the new Rust based Desktop Environment : Cosmic , that the parent company, System 76, is creating. Very hopeful about it.

I am currently using Ubuntu + KDE on company laptop. How much does pop OS work? I've heard lately guys behind Ubuntu have been trying to do nasty stuff

If KDE is your preferred DE, then I don't think Pop Os is for you. Sure you can install DE, but you'll have to debug it. Regarding what Canonical is doing with Ubuntu, this is the best part of Pop Os. Whatever mess Canonical does, pop Os just cleans it. So same rock solid Ubuntu, but no forcing of Snap packages or anything else Ubuntu tries to enforce upon you. It should be even better once Cosmic enters, as they won't depend upon Gnome too for their DE choices.

Why would you need a separate linux instance when you have wsl and docker?

Fedora is for the gods

Nah it's quite good, especially with distro box integrated, you can use arch, ubuntu etc inside it with no problem. The only reason I went with it was because no distro handled secure boot + Nvidia correctly

Kubuntu. Ultimately when you are actually doing work, the last thing you want is to be distracted by drivers or any other issue

And Arch doesn’t?

Too much mental gymnastics to keep arch running. Fedora just works and you don't need anything more.

Building a linux distro from source

So far I've seen LFS/BLFS and yocto and I have built the basic minimal os using yocto.

  • If you want a minimal OS with modern GUI capabilities which would be preferable.

  • What kind of time would I have to invest in learning either.

I run a Debian based OS for my personal project stuff.
