Berlin vs Pune. Which option to choose?

Berlin- 85k Euro Gross which comes to about 4.3k Euro net.

Pune - 62 lakhs Gross (including 10% variable) and a separate 8 lakhs RSUs oer year on top of it. US based company. Not going to IPO in 5 years most probably.

Both are working from office.

Berlin Benefits: Job slightly better in Berlin Work life balance better than Indian work culture Clean air Exposure to international living In 3 year PR and then powerful European passport Job security (not easy to fire) Long term much better prospects quality of life wise

Cons Berlin: Savings would be low 1-1.2k as cost of living higher Need to learn German

Pune Benefits: More savings Closer to freinds and family

Cons Pune: Indian work culture and management Can be fired any time No Job security or social security

Which option to choose?
Berlin (85k Euro)
Pune (62lpa)

That's a pretty huge salary cut. Adjusting for PPP, you'd need to get €280k in Berlin for an equivalent salary and lifestyle. You have to see PPP as that's what ultimately determines your spending.

As you might have realised, India has more salary than Europe. Don't try to find justification for what you want by deliberately ignoring that fact for feeling better. Just take the hard pill, you should make the conscious decision to take a PPP pay cut to move if you really want to move.

Yeah but what’s the point. At the end of the day you are gonna invest that salary anyway on which the govt will again take capital gains taxes when you sell. Also when you are layed off there is no support from the govt. Infra wise , Pune if you ever go to baner, hinjewadi side is degrading. House prices in India are quite high now(everywhere in metro cities barring a few places). If OP seems to feel a cut for a while would work if in long term he gets PR/ path to citizenship then what’s the harm?

I have lived in germany and can say run and exit india . This country does not value professionals and the tax they pay. With the political suitation and things around I would say jump to germany and lead a decent / peaceful life.

congratulations. you’re doing great.

depends if you’re single or have a family.

if you’re single, move out without a second thought. get the exposure.

if recently married, you can move too as long as you’re both on the same page.

things get complicated if you have a kid(s), as you’d have to account for education expense.

Berlin sounds awesome. all the best

What are the drawbacks? I understand salary is on the lower end (that's true in Europe mostly though).

Am in Germany and if you live In a shared accommodation with friends you will spend 800-900 on rent . You need to so cooking cleaning washing clothes everything yourself . If u go to basic Saravana Bhavan 20 euro gone. Max u can save is 1500 euro if u cook yourself and don’t party much . If you are Single you wil get 4200 and decent life at 2500 and save 1500. If you take apartment for yourself 1500-1800 in berlin

As per you ..how much should we earn to live a life as mentioned below in Berlin Living with a wife and 2 kids, living in an apartment, quarterly dine out and other basic life style needs....like clothes, car, mobile etc..

Single. Cooking cleaning cooking is fine. I usually do all that myself anyway except cooking. I most probably would take a 2 bedroom (living plus bed) near office. It looks like 1100 to 1300. Lunch is provided in office. Gym membership too. Employer subsidized local travel monthly pass. 1300 would include utilities and electricity. Going out 5-6 times a month 500 euro. Groceries 300 Euros. Subscription like Netflix Internet 200 Euro. Misc 200 Euro. Approx 2500 Euro as you said. Which leaves me with 1700 Euro. Not great but 700 per month which is cut for pension, I'll get that back as pension or full money back if I leave within 5 years.

Anything I missed in expenses?

Who said there's job security in Germany? Those are the old days. All these new age companies hire and fire at will. The old guard ( Bosch etc) have virtually stopped hiring

FluffyJellybean

I understand that private companies will fire based on company financials but European/UK employees are generally last to be fired after firing in rest of the world. Look at Amazon layoffs and others.

Its much better than India.

Btw if I may ask any tips on landing a berlin offer from India?

FluffyJellybean

Look for Visa Sponsorship on the JD on LinkedIn and other portals. Apply only to those who say they offer it. Hard thing is finding those jobs.
