If you're being moved to free pool from project , does the manager usually inform before hand. Or one fine day you just get to know that you have been released?

You can refer bench policy. I believe 30 days is the minimum time.

One person I knew was informed that his project isn't going to be extended in the middle of the month. So basically 15 days before ending the project.

Generally...it got revealed by your manager before a month or two.
