At what point should one focus entirely on the side hustle?

I am currently helping my mom start a home food business. We are still at the very initial stages (brainstorming SKUs, distribution strategy etc.). I genuinely believe there is a decent market potential and good chances of making a sustainable business if executed properly (basis market research). Progress is currently at a slow pace.

At some point, I would want to get into this business full time so that my mom can solely focus on product prep. I am not sure when. I am thinking I should first build a safety net financially (thereby bringing down the start-up risk). Until then, I would want to continue helping my mom part time in whatever way I can.

Am I thinking in the right direction? At what point should one start making a side hustle his/her full time job? What financial safety net should one ideally target before starting up? In general, any tips for balancing day job and side hustle?

Any guidance would be super helpful. Thank you.

You're thinking right—build a 6-12 month financial safety net first, then transition full-time once the business shows consistent revenue (covering basic expenses). For now, balance both by dedicating fixed weekly hours to the food biz (e.g., weekends for SKUs, evenings for marketing).
