Pretty dumb of them to assume that:
- Equations and algorithms are useless
- A life spent in academic pursuits necessarily ends in loneliness
Also solitude != loneliness
I think the context is important. For a person who's scared about being alone their entire life, any equations in their mind is pretty useless in comparison. Again, "In comparison" for such a person. It's just a correlation between the 2 points
Also, correlation isn't causation, hence, they arent saying anyone pursuing academic pursuits ends in loneliness.
It's just, that person is doing academic work and feels that it's all stupid if he/she is gonna die alone. It's like when people say, why are people so corrupt and running behind money, when they die, it's all meaningless.

Sounds like a template for a peaceful and productive life in later age, being involved with mentally-stimulating and productive work, and not having to deal with social interaction drama, nonsense, and boring social smalltalk.
