Are SWEs we doomed?

Hi everyone this is a serious question, what is your backup once its over for us? I don’t think two years down the line we would have jobs once AI takes over? Where are you going to pivot?

What doomed? There are a million other kinds of roles in the society, if you're an educated person with skills in computers.

Go and do an MBA, or Masters in Engineering, and pivot into some other branch of engineering or business jobs.

Worst case, people will always need education and training, so start some business in Education or Education-tech training or teaching kids and adults.

Software engineering was one kind of role we were performing for the society. If the need for that gets reduced, then we will all go and perform some other roles for the society and economy 🤷‍♂️

Easier said then done, think about people with mortgages and education loans

AI will take over jobs in 2 years? 😂 C'mon man, what's going on at Salesforce lmao

Jokes apart - More AI generated code means more things to review. More AI tools means deeper software penetration in newer industries - which still requires humans to review and discuss and plan and move things forward. Code will become q cheap commodity - but the actual hard parts of building products like deciding what to build, for whom all while keeping business context and other stakeholders in line - that will continue to remain.

Many of us might function like EMs function today - lot of reviews and management and planning but very less actual code writing (since AI will handle that)

This doesn't mean that it's over for juniors btw - I'm sure the paradigms will shift and our way of approaching these problems at a junior level will also adapt.

We are just getting started folks.

Nothing specific at Salesforce but after opus 4.6 release things are getting way beyond what we thought, AI is becoming self sufficient and helping build a better version of itself as per amodei. What makes you think the review and decision making won’t be done by AI. Let’s say what you say is true and I really hope it is but wouldn’t there still be a lot of job cuts?

Yes & No.

People with academic and intellectual rigor with a knack for research skills are gonna thrive in AI era.
People good at coding+marketing will make money by building indie saas apps making money like gig work.
People who came into tech just by studying study material from bhaiya, didi etc will have a tough time.

Whoever thinks they're in 3rd category which most people from Indian IT community are unfortunately, should start saving up money, pivot to materials business or maybe learn farming to cultivate food on small land to cut down expenses and become self sufficient.

Research skills will be the top requirement from now.

Let me share one very basic reality from our team.

Today our tram is working on a simple deliverable:Write SQL queries → fetch data → do some cosmetic changes → prepare a clean file → upload.

That’s it.

But here’s the funny part…

Sidekick (AI) couldn’t format the query properly.Syntax errors weren’t getting fixed. So I fixed the query myself. Data formatting that is not able to do.

Now, I’m not saying AI will or won’t take over. But think bigger.

What happens to governments if IT jobs drastically reduce? The level of tax revenue the IT industry generates isn’t small — and it’s not easy to replace.

So no… tech roles won’t just disappear.

They will evolve.

Just like:Assembly language → high-level programming → data engineering → AI systems.

Not wiped out.Reformed.

Bc tum sab faltu me tension le rahe ho..

AI is replacement of mundane activities. It will just replace level 1 folks with level 2 folks, where max mundane work happens.
the folks who are already in tech.. will survive, will thrive. It's harder for the folks who wants to enter tech, as people/tech industry expects SDE1 jobs to be done by an intern, so, bar has been raised for new comers.

Similar Example:
SDE1, SDE2 will be new SDE1. SDE2, SDE3 will be new SDE2. L1 support, L2/L3 support will be new L1 support. PM who was for 1 product, will be PM for 2/3 products.

In Product environment some Service ka tadka (although my client is product based org) we were discussing an project estimation and presented it before the management we all were in sync until some other vertical came with some agentic development tool and reduced and delivered there product within 3 months so almost 9 months of faster delivery with AI and now again management came to us giving us one course to complete and told us to revisit our estimates and YES AI is real stuff which I was is delusion that will remain AI and will not catch us but mind you it did all the things in 3 months which a team needes to do in an year so yes things are not changing they are already with us.

People don't realise that outside of IT jobs, they will struggle to make even half of what they are doing as SDE. Making money is hard in India
