Anyone here who moved from AI ML to cybersecurity

I started my career as an AI/ML engineer in the automobile domain and spent about 5 years working on embedded and intelligent systems. Later, I joined Google Cloud as an AI engineer, where I got to solve diverse problem statements across multiple domains.

Recently, I got an opportunity to move into the cybersecurity domain as a Data Scientist combining with security analytics.

Curious to hear from others:

  • Is this a good direction for long-term growth?
  • Anyone here who made a similar transition from AI/ML to cybersecurity? How was your experience?

Cybsec is gonna stay relevant and useful for long esp compared to aiml. But i don't think this is the right time to pivot, you gotta milk aiml for 2-3 years at least until it is hyped. Cybsec also comes with more responsibilities and ownership compared to ai roles for senior positions which can add more stress, it's not a good role for retirement

Thanks for sharing your insights, really appreciate it.

Just to clarify, I’m not shifting away from AI/ML. My current role focuses on applying AI and machine learning within the cybersecurity domain, particularly in areas like threat detection, anomaly analysis, and security signal modeling.

The intent is to extend AI/ML applications into security analytics, rather than pivot into a purely cybersecurity role. I agree that AI/ML continues to have strong momentum. My question is how mature is the AI + cybersecurity intersection as a domain today? For example, healthcare and finance have well-established ML ecosystems with strong data foundations and research communities. Do you see cybersecurity reaching that level of maturity soon? Since my focus will remain on building ML models (and occasionally applying LLMs) for detection and analytics, I’m curious how advanced and research-driven this field currently is.
