Just ask the manager directly. If there's not a lot of dependency it might be fairly easy. If it's been 2 years since you have been in the project you will have a period of 45 days to find another project

A big NO - for asking your manager for release, Instead he will start giving you more work. So what do you do? You start underperforming in the project and simultaneously look for another opportunity from other companies. One way another you will get something out of it.

In my case it took 5 months for release and I had a fight. If your tenure in the project is more than 2 years then it is going to be a bad ride.
