Amazon SDE1 accept or reject
I’ve just completed 2 years at JPMorgan Chase as a Software Engineer. I’m currently on track for a promotion to SDE2 in January. Current Compensation (JPMC):
- Base: ₹15.75 LPA
- Variable: ₹4.5 LPA
- Total ~₹20.25 LPA
I recently received an SDE1 offer from Amazon, and I’m torn. Amazon Offer:
- Base: ₹19.17 LPA
- Year 1 Joining Bonus: ₹6.43L
- Year 2 Bonus: ₹5L
- RSUs: ₹15L (5% vest in Year 1 = ₹75K approx, 15% in Year 2, then 40/40 in Y3/Y4)
- Total first-year comp: ~₹26.35L (Base + Year 1 Bonus + 5% RSU)
My Dilemma: Stay at JPM (SDE2 expected in Jan):
- Familiar culture, excellent team
- Good work-life balance
- Promotion incoming = potential title, comp, and responsibility bump Join Amazon as SDE1:
- Higher total comp in the short term
- Deeper exposure to scalable systems and product culture
- Brand value and potential long-term growth Concerns:
- Will joining as SDE1 at Amazon set me back compared to waiting for SDE2?
- Amazon’s work-life balance reputation — is it manageable?
- Is it worth jumping now or waiting to apply out post-SDE2?

I would suggest go for Amazon. It would definitely help you in a longer horizon.
WLB will take a hit, no doubt but worth it. Getting a Faang on your resume so early in career with payoff big time.
Go for Amazon buddy , brand name is important ,i got an early promotion here in jp and also had amazon sde 1 offer (university talent acquisition ) but keeping few perspectives wlb,job security ,non competitive atmosphere within the team which is unlikely at Amazon but I feel this is the age to get yourself tested.
Also bangalore as work location feels a nightmare to me as compared to Hyderabad (as a biker I hate traffic ) one more reason I said no to amazon
I stayed in jp as I had similar compensation so will grind and go for an sde 2 at Amazon or other big techs
I would suggest get promoted and join amazon as SDE 2
Stay in jpmc and apply for sde 2 directly at amazon
Better to stay at JPMC and apply for SDE-2 after few months.
Congrats on the offer. as @Azazel said, switching would definitely help you.
