About to graduate from a top design college, but not looking for jobs, am I doing something wrong?
Anxiety about job search eats away at me, but I feel taking some time to build my portfolio and upskill is more important than diving into the market immediately. (I did have some offers, but I'm not interested in them atm because they didn't align with my vision)
This is going to be a pretty long post, but I want to know your opinion/advice if you are kind enough to give any.
So, I'm a soon to graduate industrial designer and I'm working on my graduation project thesis, I finished the project last year from a good watch company as a deisgn intern, and have tried working with start-ups (ended horribly) and applied to a few places since then. I'm not sure how many industrial designers even use this app, but I hope I'm not doing the wrong thing by exploring and taking things slow before graduating?
I took a longer break than I wanted to, and now I'm able to work much better. But I feel like something is missing. Industrial design jobs are scarce and I have this itch to switch to UX, hence working on my portfolio while juggling my graduation project documentation and job search has been very weird. I was also doing an online design cohort and tried interning at a start-up that not only underpaid me but also undervalued me.
This all feels like unnecessary struggle while people who have less than perfect portfolios are at a better place than me... especially after making a switch to ux.
I'm very confused, should I focus on switching to ui/ux (for money) save up and go for masters abroad, should I chase my passion of industrial design in India and struggle for a few years.... or should I just stfu and finish my gp first and focus on the rest later? :"""
A few people who were my juniors are getting better packages than me in the ui/ux industry and it's a little bit of an ego issue for me lol. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!
