A guide to freshers joining companies

The title says it all. What are the things that a college graduate (to-be), must research before applying for companies. I'd appreciate a detailed answer that covers all aspects that an average Indian is concerned about. Please talk about product vs service based companies, pros and cons in each (from your experience), salaries, work life, growth potential, etc.
