Is gurgaon worth relocating to?

Married and have a 2 yr old kiddo. Got a job opportunity in Gurgaon, but not sure if the city is a good fit. What do you guys think? Btw i'm 40, so party life is pretty much out of the picture.

Relocated to Gurgaon in October 2023. And have been regretting ever since. I know the problems that I am highlighting are pretty common for cities but the fact is Gurgaon doesn’t qualify to be city and yet is so expensive. So here you go with the cons

  1. Frequent power-cuts
  2. High cost of living
  3. Poorest roads
  4. No drainage
  5. Zero to negative civic sense - from being absolutely rude to you for no reason to staring/shouting at you even if they are on the wrong side of a one way
  6. Too many Thars on the road driven by hooligans

Pros:

  1. Cheap liquor (Doesn’t matter to me so its nullified)
  2. Pubs ( But you ruled it out)

Since you also need to plan for the kid’s school et al, you might need to research a bit on the fees part coz I don’t have one now :D

Also, it also depends on the benchmark that you have- the city that you are coming from! But trust me, there aren’t too many cities that will fall so low in almost every parameter! My benchmark city before this was lower is what I assumed- but Ggn has exceeded my expectations!

You hit home on the fears I had - power cut, cost of living ( is it worth it?) , civic sense. One of the brokers told me they provide shuttle cabs from the metro to their society to protect from robbing!?! Not sure how to react on that.

Abhi Gurgaon mein rahke Thar ko problem bolega to kaisa chalega bhai :)

It's good actually.

Pros:- Infrastructure (surely water logging at times in monsoon but other than that roads are wide enough, only traffic is during peak office hours), metro helps alot, good societies of DLF have good built quality, newer societies are as well.

Traffic: Only the junctions tend to be traffucked due to the crowd during peak hours but it's not as slow as Bangalore.

People: No language based Racism or superiority plus being NCR, people migrate from all over the nation.

Food: Some restaurants are expensive but then there are always cheaper options.

Amenities: Too many markets tbh, the common plazas markets by HUDA, malls etc are there as well.

Clubs/Bars/High End Cafes or Restaurants: Well obv corp working class people only know drinking as a fun activity so Gurgaon got that too much. Plus nice cafes and restaurants if you want to take your partner out for a romantic dinner

Cons:- Monsoon hits you hard, you think about changing cities every year.

Dependency on Brokers for Flats or Apartments coz most of the online listings are fake.

Jaat supremacy at times, rowdy behaviour, unpleasant or unwelcoming nature.

Even with good roads the ends of Gurgaon becomes too far from the city centre.

Appreciate the indepth answer. I work remotely so traffic is a non issue. I understand the broker part x( had a 2 yr stint at Magicbricks. Good to know that there's no language bias unlike southern India ( adding Karnataka to the list )

I was reading the comments and a few things do not make sense.
Greater Noida is just 2 hours from Gurgaon. If you are anyway working remote, why do you want to relocate to Gurgaon? What is your requirement?

About in-laws situation, whether you are in Gurgaon or Noida, the situation will be same, you will still be living pretty far from them and would require to travel.

GigglyPenguin
GigglyPenguin

Working remotely gets kinda isolated, you tend to become like a hermit (background - remote since covid.)A lot of my friends and you'd agree the social crowd is in Gurgaon and closer to Delhi side. That's one of the reasons. Also 2 hours is putting it mildly, one bad road accident or rains and your car is your air BNB for the day.

No northern towns.

Why?

quality of life, crime rate, subpar infrastructure.

Where are you today?

Right now at greater Noida. Keep bouncing between folks at Doon and inlaws in Pune. Everyone thinks remote work means I can be everywhere whenever they want 😅

If ur in Noida move to gurgaon

JumpyPickle

Depends on what are your other options. If its NCR region. Noida can be a decent option too. Cheaper food and accommodation . Roads are also better planned and less water logging as well.
but Liquor will be costly 😂

Noida was on my list too though it's hard to differentiate the benchmark problems b/w gurgaon and noida/g noida. Just trying to figure out the lesser of two evils.

would suggest you to list down your requirements in a priority order and then make a decision.

CTC?

Enough to survive, save and a few family travels here and there. CTC isn't part of the equation, I'm asking about GGN, because the news media is making me think twice about the place.

And I hear the crowd and traffic is shite

Lived in Gurgaon my whole life. Visited other cities. A lot of its drawbacks are being overblown

Yes, there is waterlogging. But apart from that time of the year, most days the roads are wide enough and not bad. Live in a decent society and you should be fine. Power cuts differ from area to area.

My area hardly receives terrible powercuts. It's usually for a brief period of time.

There are good hospitals, good places to hang out, good schools etc.

A car is an absolute must. D

Air quality is immaterial if you are living in Greater Noida. Similar air quality.

There is hooliganism. But as long as you stay away from such type of Haryanvis, you should be fine. And is easy to do so since there are so many non-haryanvis living in Gurgaon.

Lived in Gurgaon for a year from Mumbai. If you are not from North India, the heat is unbearable and winters are hard. Pollution fucked my lungs, had to take medicine for Asthma. Long walks are not possible. Power cuts so you need to rent in an overpriced gated community with Power back up. People have zero civic sense, mostly unfriendly crowd. Liquor is cheap if you like to drink.
Good restaurants, food is generally better than most cities. Status conscious Society, you will judged by your car, clothes and where you live. Unless you have an opportunity of a lifetime, I would pass it.

Thanks for the candid opinion. I get where you're coming from. I'm a northerner from Uttrakhand whose childhood has been in Mumbai. If my job opportunity was from Mumbai, this thread wouldn't exist😂
