5 Years in UI/UX with Low Pay — Is It Too Late to Switch to Development or Cloud Tech?
Hi everyone,
I’ve been working as a UI/UX designer for nearly 5 years, all at the same company. I haven’t switched jobs during this time, so I’m still stuck with an entry-level salary. Recently, I’ve started to feel that the market value of UI/UX designers—especially in terms of pay and demand—is quite low compared to developers or cloud professionals.
I’m seriously considering a career change, possibly towards:
-
Frontend or Full Stack Development
-
Cloud Technologies (like AWS, Azure, etc.)
I have some basic exposure to frontend tools from collaborating with dev teams, but I’ve never done serious coding or cloud work myself.
I’d really appreciate advice from anyone who:
Has made a similar switch from design to tech
Can speak to the current demand and future prospects for dev or cloud roles
Can suggest learning paths or certifications to get started
Can help me decide whether making this change after 5 years in design is even realistic
Would love to hear your thoughts, experiences, or even words of caution. Thanks in advance!
