28 single need guidance

Hi everyone,

I’m 28 years old and have been working in the corporate world for the last 4.5 years. Lately, I’ve been feeling confused about the direction I want my career to take.

My parents are encouraging me to prepare for the UPSC exam. I’ll admit, I do feel drawn to it — the prestige, the influence, the ability to make a real impact. It’s hard not to be attracted to that. At the same time, I genuinely enjoy working with technology. I’m very interested in AI, and I feel happy doing the kind of work I do right now.

The problem is, I’m also someone who wants power, recognition, and a sense of significance. I have some startup ideas as well, but I’m not sure if I have the time or patience to pursue them right now. And if I don’t try for UPSC soon, I’m afraid I might miss my window — it already feels late.

So I’m stuck between three paths:

  1. UPSC for prestige and impact

  2. Tech/AI for passion and growth

  3. Startups for independence and building something big

If anyone has been in a similar situation or has any guidance, I’d really appreciate your perspective. How do you decide between passion, stability, prestige, and ambition?

Thanks in advance.

If you want prestige and significance, you are working towards what others think of you.

Flip it around and look at what YOU want to think of yourself. When you're 50 and retired, do you want to look back thinking "oh I was at a senior post that doesn't really change the world" or otherwise.

If you are doing fine in your current field then don’t go for UPSC.
