1:1s

Curious to know the topics and themes you actively discuss during 1:1s with your manager

What’s your current frequency? (Use the poll below) Do you report metrics? If yes, what metrics? On a scale of 1-10, how effective are your 1:1s?

Are there any good posts on running effective 1:1s for PMs?

Always weekly. The 1:1 is your greatest opportunity for career growth and clarity. People who nail the 1:1 usually do well

Also the people who are most unprepared and suck and 1:1s get punished overtime

I've not had a 1:1 with my manager for over a year. Can you pls systematically explain what happens in a 1:1? Are you supposed to present your contribution and work? Or is it just the manager that gives feedback?

I have a weekly 1:1s with my direct reporting team of 3 people. The agenda i follow is

  1. This week's priorities
  2. Last week's updates
  3. Any other action item
  4. Any other discussion points

Works well for.me.- I hope my team feels the same way

Curious, Do the managers set up the 1:1s? Because mine just calls me whenever he has work but otherwise won't discuss anything. Even annual feedback was just on the portal itself. 🥲

You should be aggressively driving this 30 mins - more than any other meeting on your calendar

Shit 1:1 experience.
You schedule a meeting with manager and then chase him/Her to sit for 10 mins. Even that 10 mins, they are prepping for next meeting

have you tried sharing an agenda in advance?

Ofcourse. Maybe I have had shitty managers 🙃

My manager treats my 1:1 as his free therapy sessions and only gossips about his life

Have always felt that frequent 1:1s or just some cadence is very helpful. While a lot of them are useless (well, most of them), it just reduces the chances of you being caught unaware if you get a bad rating or bad feedback

Weekly 1:1 are must if you are concerned about your career growth. Your manager might be busy with dealing other stuff and skip these meetings but make sure you repeatedly remind him. And this is not being poky. If you are not bothered about your growth, Why would he/she be.
Discuss about YOUR work, what went well, what could have been better. The moment the context switches to other topic, pull it back for yourself.

Points in 1:1

  • What went well
  • Action Items
  • Alignment with the goals
  • Soft skills pointers

We normally have fortnightly calls to discuss these things :

  1. Is the work hectic?
  2. Issues faced within or outside team
  3. Suggestion on improving any process.
  4. Tasks which require attention from the manager.
  5. Feedback for the employee on his work or if any received from his working peers.

They are great, but the frequency should be biweekly.

Since a week is not enough to generate sufficient content 😆
